Teaching

Lead Instructor, Coding for Cancer, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, July - Aug 2022. Taught an intensive four-week virtual course teaching computational skills (R) and cancer research applications to high schoolers, predominantly from backgrounds systemically excluded from careers in biomedical sciences.

Instructor of Record, BIOL403, University of Washington, March 2022 - June 2022. Designed and taught senior-level biology course “Modern topics in evolution”. Lead instructor for four weeks, focusing on cancer/somatic cell evolution.

Teaching Trainee, STEP-UP, University of Washington, Sept 2021 – June 2022. Science Teaching Experience Program for Upcoming PhDs (STEP-UP) is a year-long course for developing teaching skills, particularly focused on equitable and inclusive teaching using active learning techniques.

Teaching Assistant, BIO481, Biology Department, University of Washington, Sept 2019 – Dec 2019. Instructor for the lab section of upper-level undergraduate biology course “Experimental Evolution”. Developed introductory presentations for each lab, demonstrated proper technique and supervised students. Provided support outside of class to help students understand concepts in office hours or one-on-one meetings. Supervised a team of five undergraduate TAs to set up and oversee each lab.

Field Teacher, Bryant Pond 4H Camp and Learning Center, April 2014 - Nov 2014. Taught visiting school groups grade 3-12 ecological concepts, leadership, environmental conservation, and service learning in an outdoor educational setting. Led backcountry trips with high school students.

Mentorship

Mentor for high school researchers, Polygence, Sept 2021 - Present. Provided advice and direction to two high school student completing a self-designed biology research project over 10+ virtual mentorship sessions each.

Mentor for undergraduate researchers, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, March 2015 - Sept 2018. Supervised four undergraduate researchers during my time in the Shou lab, three of whom became co-authors on my publications.

Outreach

Visiting Science Educator, Skype a Scientist, Nov 2020 – Oct 2021. Visited 7 classrooms remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic to give an interactive presentation about science careers, my research, and various questions about science.
